SLRFU grateful to Caltex for extending sponsorship

Hope this season will be a better year for the Sri Lanka national rugby squad and improvements in the domestic tournaments with much better financial packages for the national players could be expected, said the President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Commodore Harsha Mayadunne, at the Caltex-Observer Touchdown Rugby Awards at the Sapphire Ballroom of Ceylon Continental Hotel.

Commodore Mayadunne, thanked both Caltex and Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) for organising this contest for the second consecutive year and congratulated all the award winners.

He further thanked Caltex for their increased amount of sponsorship for yet another period of three years (2003 to 2005) for the 'A' Division, 'B' Division and Clifford Cup tournaments, and hoped that Caltex will give serious thought of helping the SLRFU in their endeavours of giving better financial packages to the national players.

Commodore Mayadunne also said that rugby needs money as "it's all professional today", and that the SLRFU cannot afford to pay much to the national players, and hoped that the government will offer some sort of incentives for the establishments keen on offering various sponsorship deals. He said: The incoming Council will have to look into these matters.

He said that Caltex came to the rescue of the SLRFU when they were looking for sponsors after Ceylon Brewery withdrew their sponsorship, and that the SLRFU will always be grateful to Caltex for this gesture. He further said that he expected that this year's tournaments will be interesting with competitions much better now that the Council has agreed for clubs to sign on overseas players once again.

Commodore Mayadunne once again thanked Kishu Gomes, head of Caltex, and his team for their unstinted co-operation and support to the SLRFU.
