Arun Karunaratne has chance of swimming in SAF Games

by LESLIE FERNANDO

Arun Karunaratne, the back-stroker presently training in Australia under Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe who is also coaching the Olympic Gold Medallist Matt Welsh in Victoria, will not come over for the final trial (January 22 to 25) for the South Asian Federation Games (SAF Games) to be held from March 29 to April 7. The trial will be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool.

Despite Arun not facing the final trial, he has a great chance of representing Sri Lanka at the Games. NAASU has requested Arun who swam at the World Championships in Australia in November last year, to submit the timings confirmed by his coach before January 22. Meanwhile, Sydney Olympic swimmers Theekshana Ratnasekera who is here on a short holiday from the United States and Conrad Francis who came from Australia are training under their respective coaches. Conrad who represented Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games will be concentrating in two events - breast stroke and the butterfly stroke according to his coach.

The long distance champion swimmer Rumedha Madigasekera of St. Joseph's College who is in the national pool for the SAF Games will skip the trial as he will not be able to swim at the SAF Games. Rumedha is preparing to sit for the 'A' Level Examination during that period.
