Bribery rampant in country's judicial system - Survey

The study of the country's judicial system has revealed that bribery was rampant at all levels from police officers, court clerks, lawyers, fiscal officers and even judges. The survey among judges turned up at least 5 cases of suspected bribery of judges.

Govt. sector pay hike in July?

Salary of government servants may be increased by July this year but the quantum of increase has still not been decided, authoritative governmental sources revealed to the Sunday Observer. The percentage of the hike will be decided taking into consideration the growth rate of the economy at the end of the first quarter of the current year, sources further revealed.

Peace talks fifth round in Berlin

The fifth round of peace talks between the government and the LTTE is scheduled for February 7 and 8 in Berlin, Germany. The talks will concentrate on humanitarian problems of the displaced people in the North and East and expected to touch on finding a political solution to the ethnic conflict, diplomatic sources said.
