The controversial Upper Kotmale hydro power project, which has been delayed due to protests, is expected to get under way in the near future. Once completed, it will provide 350 megawatts of power to the national grid. Japan is the main donor for the project with funding amounting to US$ 270 million. Karu Jayasuriya, Minister of Power and Energy

"The Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project will be completed within the next six years.

"At present the preliminary work of the project is being carried out while a consultancy firm will be selected within the next four months."
