Two mini hydro power projects for Badulla The Access Group of Companies is planning to set up two mini hydro power projects, envisaged to provide five megawatts of power, in Badulla. This four million US dollar project, which will be carried out as a foreign collaboration by Access Energy (Pvt) Ltd., will be backed by a consortium of banks, a company spokesman said. The newest company within the group, Access Engineering (Pvt) Ltd., has already carried out about 10-15 projects. Several projects for the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, a flood control programme in Greater Colombo, fisheries harbours and part of the A-9 contract are among the projects handled by the company. The company, which will be the biggest within the group, has 12 Institute for Construction Training and Development-certified civil engineers. The Group lit up 8,000 rural houses mainly in the Uva Province under a World Bank-funded scheme during the last two years. "The Access Group, which started about 13 years ago, now has a hand in almost every sector of infrastructure development. Although we are widely known as an 'arms dealer', we have not sold a single item of arms or ammunition. What we sell, in fact, are items like body armour, back-packs, communication, night vision and other equipment, and clothing items for Sri Lanka's Armed Forces," he stressed. The Group started in 1989 with 10-15 employees, but now has over 600 workers. It has over 20 divisions and represents many internationally known brand names in the island. Access Natural Water (Pvt) Ltd., which markets the Aqua Fresh brand of mineral water, is increasing its market share specially among corporate clients. The Group is also active in the telecommunication, transport and aviation sectors. |
