ICA appoints Lankan as Secretary by Elmo Leonard Sri Lankan, Kamil Ismail was elected Secretary of the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) at ICA's biennial assembly concluded in Jaipur, India recently. Tom Ellawala became the first Lankan to receive the 'ICA Life Achievement Award' at the same event. ICA is the preeminent world body for the trade and prorogation of coloured gemstones, and is headquartered in New York, USA. Ismail, a prominent gem dealer in the country, is ICA's immediate past director for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's gem trade has named 2003 as the 'Year of blue gemstones'. FACETS 2003, Sri Lanka's premier gem and jewellery exhibition, will be held from September 8 to 10 at the Hilton Colombo. At the ICA Congress, Chanaka Ellawala, President of the Blue Sapphire Cluster Promotion presented his case in favour of Sri Lanka's blue sapphires. Following the ICA Congress, 15 gem dealers from USA, Europe and Israel, including ICA President Joe Menzies and past President Eli Ezri, visited Sri Lanka's gem mines. Four journalists, representing four of the world's most prestigious journals on gems and jewellery, also visited the local gem mines. They will make their cases on gem mines and coloured precious stones in Sri Lanka. The international gem buyers visited gem mines in Ratnapura and Nivitigala, Kurunegala. The Ratnapura gemstones include sapphire, ruby, alexandrite, tourmaline, aquamarine, topaz, amethyst, chrysobyl (cat's eye), garnet and zircon. |
