Govt. sector pay hike in July?

by S. Selvakumar

Salary of government servants may be increased by July this year but the quantum of increase has still not been decided, authoritative governmental sources revealed to the Sunday Observer. The percentage of the hike will be decided taking into consideration the growth rate of the economy at the end of the first quarter of the current year, sources further revealed.

While the pay hike may be effected from July the government has appointed two committees one to tackle the economy and the other to arrest the cost of living. The former is headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the latter by Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya. Seven items have been identified for the soaring cost of living namely power, samba rice, water bill, gas, coconuts, telephone bills and flour.

At the pre-Cabinet sessions last week the ministers decided not to hold any minister responsible for the price increases of any of the above seven items but instead work collectively as a team to tackle the issue.

Another committee has already been appointed by the Prime Minister headed by Lands Minister Rajitha Senaratne to educate the people through UNF members in the provincial and other councils on the peace process and dividends it has brought upon the people.
