Peace talks fifth round in Berlin

The fifth round of peace talks between the government and the LTTE is scheduled for February 7 and 8 in Berlin, Germany. The talks will concentrate on humanitarian problems of the displaced people in the North and East and expected to touch on finding a political solution to the ethnic conflict, diplomatic sources said.

The reason for shifting the talks to Europe is mainly due to the health condition of LTTE chief negotiator Dr. Anton Balasingham who did not wish to take the strenuous journey to Thailand all the way from London. The peace talks could not be held in London where he resides because the LTTE is a banned foreign terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom. Though Norway offered to host the talks the severe cold in that country at present was cited as a reason for shifting the venue.

Meanwhile, the government has so far not responded to the PA's request to accommodate an Opposition representative at the Peace talks.

Asked why the government is mum on this request, a high ranking government source close to the government's peace delegation said that the Prime Minister was a signatory to the Liam Fox agreement during the PA regime.

According to this agreement, the government in power will hold talks with the LTTE and keep the Opposition informed. "The then Opposition which is in power now is sticking to this agreement," he added.
