J'pura Varsity will reopen tomorrow by ANJANA GAMAGE "All arrangements have been finalised to reopen the Sri Jayawardenapura University (SJU) from tomorrow, January 27 , the Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. D.S. Epitawatta, told the " Sunday Observer". However according to the Vice Chancellor, it will be reopened tomorrow only for first year students and the date of reopening for the others will be notified later. " We have not yet decided on a date to reopen it for other students. However a date has been nominated and intimated to the university senate and we are hopeful of reopening it within 2 or 3 weeks," he said. The Sri Jayawardenapura University was closed indefinitely from last November 8, following a clash between two student groups, which led to the death of O.W. Samantha, a third-year student, who succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo National Hospital on November 9. Another student of the same batch, Indika Aththanayake was also critically injured. Meanwhile twelve selected individual advisory programmes were submitted to the VC by the lecturers attached to the four faculties - Medicine, Science, Arts and Management - to curb violence within the university premises and they have already been implemented even now. According to the VC, hostel accommodation for girl students have been provided within the university premises and for boy students outside hostels to avoid unnecessary trouble. One of the recommendations, a special police post, will also be set up in mid-February within the university premises to ensure the safety of students and the academic staff. |
