Bountiful maha harvest in NE in the offing by Shanika Sriyananda Liyanage Over 250,000 acres of agricultural land, which were lying dormant due to the war in the North and East, will come under the plough again, this year, Minister of Agriculture and Live Stock S.B. Dissanayake told the 'Sunday Observer'. The Ministry expects a good harvest from Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Mannar, Batticaloa and Ampara districts and the border areas of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Puttalam. These land will be cultivated again after a lapse of nearly twenty years and the farmers will be provided with fertilizer and seed paddy. " Non-availability of fertilizer was a big problem faced by the farmers in the North and East and the Ministry has already taken steps to distribute fertilizer among them", he said. According to Minister Dissanayake quality seed paddy, agro chemicals and equipment were also distributed among farmers and the Ministry expects a bountiful harvest in the maha season. Other subsidiary crops such as onions, chilies and tobacco which were successfully cultivated in the North and East had to be abandoned due to the war with most of the farmers being displaced to other areas in the south and certain others rendered as refugees elsewhere. However, with the ceasefire in operation the farmers have returned to their original settlements and recommenced cultivation. |
