Three months grace for our illicit emigrants in Syria

About 2050 Sri Lankan illegal Emigrants in Syria have been allowed to remain in that country for three more months following fruitful talks Minister of Employment and Labour Mahinda Samarasinghe has had with its counterpart there.

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe recently met the Syrian Labour Minister Gada al Jabi and it was revealed that except for 240 Sri Lankans in Syria, the others were illegal emigrants.

The number of illegal emigrants to Syria has increased owing to the conflict situation in neighbouring states and because it is economically advantageous to remain there. According to the Foreign Ministry, Sri Lankans who return home during this 3-month grace period will not be penalised in any form. (Lankapuvath)
