Neither SLFP nor PA will obstruct peace process by Deepal Warnakulasuriya "The Sri Lanka Freedom Party or the People's Alliance will not oppose or obstruct the peace process. The process was commenced by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as the leader of the PA and we are happy to see it is being continued by the UNF regime. That is the message I brought to the Jaffna people", Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa told the Sunday Observer after his visit to the Jaffna peninsula, last week. Commenting on the visit he said that bringing a respectable peace to the land is the ultimate wish of every citizen in the country and the PA will completely assist the government to proceed the peace process. "But, at the same time, we will oppose where the government takes wrong steps and the same matter will also help them to work along a correct path", said the Opposition Leader. On an invitation of Hindu Religious Affairs Minister T. Maheshwaran to inaugurate a training school for Hindu clergies known as Kurukulam, he went to Jaffna last Monday (January 20) morning and came back the same night. He had also visited the Nagadipa temple, Nallur Kovil and the Jaffna University. He regretted that he did not have enough time to meet the people there. Rajapaksa also said that he was thanked by Jaffna University Vice Chancellor Prof. Balasundarampillai and others saying that if there was any doubts about the peace process had completely vanished with the Opposition Leader's visit to Jaffna. The Opposition Leader also addressed the public in Tamil and gave a promise of 'Nan Yalpanadukku Meendum Waruven' (I will come back to Jaffna again). |
