10 countries for Asian region Satellite shuttle C'ships Nearly 50 shuttlers from 10 countries in the Asian region will play in the Satellite Championship of the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) and International Badminton Federation (IBF) to be staged at the Royal College Sports Complex from February 26 to March 1. This is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA). The President of the SLBA, Riza Jumar, told the Sunday Observer that the ABC are giving the SLBA US Dollars 10,000, but half of the sum will be towards the prize money. He also disclosed that the overseas players will be accommodated at a five-star hotel in Colombo, and that the SLBA, are attempting to get more sponsors involved with the event. Yonex will sponsor the shuttles and the carpets that will be utilised. Apart from Sri Lanka, the other countries vying for honours in this individual tournament will be India, Pakistan, bangladesh, Nepal, Maldive Islands, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Iran and also Japan, who have requested for an invitation. This tournament is for lower ranked players from each country. Jumar further disclosed that the SLBA will send six men and three women shuttlers for the Sudirman Cup World Championship to be staged in Holand from March 18. They will be accompanied by two officials. He said that the SLBA needs a minimum of Rs. 1 lakh per persons as they (The SLBA) have to meet all the costs of the tour including air fare and accommodation and that they have requested the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for a part of the expenses.
