Puttalam DCA keen to spread cricket activity in district

Puttalam District Cricket Association had many sound proposals that were aired during the course of the annual general meeting held last month at the Harindra Corea Stadium in Chilaw.

One of the proposals to be pursued by the office-bearers was to activate inter-school cricket in the district and for that it was decided to form a School Cricket Association from the schools in the Puttalam District so that the association will get the support from all those schools to have regular matches and promote the game so that the talent available will not be allowed just to drift away.

Once the association is properly constituted, it can well be a boon to the cricketers who will get the chance of playing matches within the district and also when they come up to some standard they should be able to venture into other areas.

Once the School Cricket Association is formed in Puttalam District, the association can look out for sponsors - and there is no doubt that sponsors will readily come forward to help the cricketers with the sponsorship campaigns.

The sponsors will bring in the necessary funds and what is important at the start and throughout is the proper management of funds which is of vital importance for any association to keep going.

With an association formed, there will be many clubs that can be formed as there will be a lot of cricket activity if the office-bearers of the Puttalam District Cricket Association are active and naturally cricket in the district will thrive.

It is also hoped to start a fund with contributions from cricketers.

In 1983, the Puttalam District Cricket Association formed the Bens Cricket Club at Katuneriya and they had their colours night in late December at St. Sebastians MMV.

A special tribute was paid to versatile cricket coach and retired English teacher the late Mr. Benny Fernando by his brother Wilfred Fernando - the senior cricket coach in Puttalam District, who is also the Director of Bens Cricket Club.

Besides dwelling on the efforts of his late brother to lift the standard of cricket in the district, Wilfred Fernando also recalled the past cricket history in the district.

There were also tributes paid to the cricketers of the last 20 years and the women cricketers too came in for some praise.

There were mementos presented to the past cricketers. Messrs S. Peiris, Suren Waas, Nimal Fernando (member provincial council) Secretary of the School Development Society Quintin Fernando and members of the Old Boys' Parents Association participated at the meeting.

The office-bearers of the association are:

President: Kingsley Laal, Vice-president: W. M. W. Fernando and Suren Waas, Secretary: Godfrey Dabrera, Asst. Secretary: Mohan Wickremasinghe, Treasurer: Chinthaka Fernando. (A. C. de S)
