Pradeep Nishan's 17-ball 50 a record ?

Scoring 50 in 17 balls at any level of cricket is a record feat.

And Pradeep Nishan at age 19 must have statisticians busy as to whether this is a record in domestic cricket though the youngster did so in a Division-III `Daily News' Trophy match recently. It could be a record at any level of domestic cricket.

Pradeep struck four fours and two sixes for the newly formed Summerset Sports Club, Moratuwa.

A right hander and product of Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa Pradeep bats at No.4. For a teenager it is some feat. But Pradeep says he did not find the encouragement needed at school to fine tune his talents. "I played for the college under-13 team and was a fair batsman, but I did not find the encouragement needed to go up the ladder," lamented Pradeep.

The youngster is one of the many school drop outs from the game. With the talent, but sadly not a cricket master's blue eyed boy. Like any other kid with a craze for the game Pradeep says he used to wield a willow from the tender age of 6.

"I turned out for my elder brother's softball club by the age of 13", said an enthusiastic Pradeep who found the doors of Summerset S.C. open to him. The club was formed by another former Cambrian, Chaminda Dias so that talented youngsters ignored by their schools could find it a home to further develop their skills.

If the teenager's 17-ball effort is anything to go by, certainly Pradeep does have what is needed to make an impact. But unfortunately he does not have the backing of one those glamour clubs, and hopes fortune would smile on him from Summerset S.C.
