National Lotteries Board projects Rs 6.2b turnover for 2003 by Elmo Leonard The National Lotteries Board (NLB) has projections of achieving a turnover of Rs 6.2 billion for 2003, an improvement over the 2002 turnover of Rs 4.8 billion. Sales of NLB lottery tickets have risen during the past few years, and the 2002 turnover is a 30 per cent improvement over that of 2001, NLB Chairman Imthiaz Ismail told the media last week. NLB has been in business for 40 years, and is the successor to the Hospital Lottery, Ismail said. During the past 40 years, NLB had promoted sweep tickets all over Sri Lanka. It had paid the largest amount of prize money to the highest number of winners, NLB Executive Director Mohan Wijesinghe said. Today, the Board conducts lotteries throughout the week, producing winners every day. The Vasana Sampatha lottery, introduced in 1994, is the most popular lottery in Sri Lanka, and most tickets are purchased by women, Ismail said. The Vasana lottery has a weekly draw conducted on Thursdays, which awards three winners Rs 1 million each, as well as Rs 1000, Rs 50 and Rs 10 prizes to several winners. Due to the popularity of Vasana among women, two actresses, Mandira Bedi from India and Kanchana Mendis, a popular local movie and teledrama artist, were last week appointed brand ambassadors for the Vasana Sampatha lottery. They will carry out a two-pronged campaign. The first will be a multi-media campaign through the press, radio and television. The other will be a roadshow covering Colombo, Galle, Anuradhapura and Kandy. |
