UK charity undertakes construction of ward at Cancer Hospital

Sriyani Soysa has become a household name in charity work for the amelioration of cancer victims both in the UK and Sri Lanka. She initiated te "Roshan Wijesuriya Memorial Project" in the UK when her nephew became a victim of the disease and has helped Maharagama Cancer Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Children with Leukaemia (UK). Her organisation has donated several lakhs of rupees worth of equipment and items for cancer patients since her fund raising activities started bearing fruit.

During her last visit to Sri Lanka, she made close contact with the medical authorities at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital through her brother Dr. Nihal Wijesooriya - himself a retired senior medical officer of the Minister of Health in Colombo. This meeting ended with the Maharagama Cancer Hospital authorities entrusting Sriyani with the task of funding the construction of a new paediatric ward at the Hospital.

According to Sriyani, there are pledges of financial support for the construction for the ground floor and first floor and came forward to undertake this massive task of completing the second floor which would house about 18-20 beds at a cost of nearly Rs. 2.5 million rupees or (about 17000 sterling pound).

Sriyani has already started work on this project both in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom and appeals to everyone to give her a helping hand to ensure the success of her project. According to Sriyani she will accept any contribution - big or small that will help her to achieve her objective.

Donations may be sent to Sriyani Soysa in the UK at No. 82, Sandringham Road, London NW2 5EN or in Sri Lanka to Savings Account No. 10043 - 1135927 to Bank of Ceylon, Union Place Branch, a/c of Roshan Wijesooriya Memorial Association.

She told us that a raffle is on now and tickets can be purchased to help this project. On previous occasions she has been helped by Mr. Al Fayed - the owner of Harrods and many others who gave her a lot of enthusiasm and courage to continue her charitable work. She had a special word of thanks for British Prime Minister Tony Blair for his encouragement and also token donation of an autographed pen for the Charity.
