Two significant Buddhist events commemorated by ANJANA GAMAGE The Ministry of Buddha Sasana convened an international conference on "Buddha Sasana in Theravada Countries": Issues and the Way Forward recently at the BMICH, to commemorate the 250th year of the revival of higher ordination and the founding of the Syamopali Maha Nikaya. These two events had a profound impact on later events in the history of Sri Lanka, by reviving a Buddhist renaissance, monastic developments and literature which paved the way for a social and cultural awakening throughout the country. Primary four-fold objectives that were pronounced at the confab were promotion of the Buddha Sasana, protection of the Sasana, propagation of the Buddha Dhamma and promotion of the practice of Buddhist values in everyday life. It was also envisaged at the conference that Sri Lanka being a leading Theravada country in the region with a wide range of expertise and knowledge on the Three Canons (Tripitaka) and the associated exegetical literature should provide leadership and enable such Buddhist countries to gather and create new bonds of friendship, goodwill and mutual understanding among other countries. It was also pointed out that this spirit of cooperation would lead to confront common problems and challenges to Buddhism as well. At the end of the conference, three important proposals were submitted to the Government for consideration. They are popularization of Pali language and eliminate inaccuracies in Pali texts, the promotion of buddhist practice (Patipatti and Pativadha Sasanas) Education and Cultural and build upon the visiting awareness of the unity of Buddha Dhamma and more towards Universal Buddhism. The conference was attended by delegates and resource speakers from Australia, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. |
