Free tickets for five swimmers at World C'ships

Five Sri Lanka swimmers are in luck's way. The Federation Internationale De Nation (FINA), the world controlling body for aquatic sports, has already sent five return air tickets to NAASU to enable the swimmers to swim at the 10th FINA World Championships to be held in June in Barcelona, Spain.

According to NAASU media spokesman Vijitha Fernando, a trial was held recently at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool to select the swimmers for SAF Games and the FINA World Championships and the members of Conrad Francis of St. Joseph's Swimming Club who accounted for three new Sri Lanka records, Asela Pradeep of SSC who established a new national and Sri Lanka record and winning two more events together with Arun Karunaratne who is presently training in Victoria Australia his brother Naveen Karunaratne of SSC, Eranga Fernando of Rainbow AC, Kalyan Veera of Rainbow AC.

Menaka de Silva of St. Bridget's Convent, Mihiri Kandanarachchi of Mahamaya College Kandy the only woman swimmer to win all four events at the trial, Zoo Sandya Veera of Rainbow AC, Chathuri Abeykoon, Chandri Haputhanthri and Dilini Liyanage all of Ladies College have been submitted to the NAASU selection committee. According to the NAASU spokesman three men and two women swimmers will make the trip.

Meanwhile, the NAASU selection committee headed by brig. B. Munasinghe (Chairman) Group Captian Harsha Karannagoda, DIG Michael Attygalle, Azeem Azain and Dr. Lalindra Gunaratne met on Wednesday and selected 30 men and women swimmers to represent Sri Lanka at the SAF Games to be held in Pakistan.

The names have been submitted to National Sports Council/NOC/Sports Ministry for approval.
