Thuhashini 'Player of the Year 2002' in Arizona

A former Sri Lanka amateur women's golf champion - Thuhashini Selvaratnam was adjudged the "Player of the Year 2002" in the State of Arizona in the United States of America (USA). She won this award the previous year (2001) too.

The "Player of the Year" is chosen on points each player obtains from tournaments played during the golfing season, and they include the US Amateur Championships, Mid Amateur Championships and the Public Links Championships. For all these tournaments there are qualifying rounds and once a player qualifies in Arizona, the main tournament is played in another State.

Thuhashini received 1457.5 points, while the runner-up Missy Farr received 722.5 points. The awards ceremony took place on January 20.

Presently the Operations Manager of the Arizona State Golf Association (ASGA). Thuhashini, also represented Arizona State against Utah State last year (2002), in which year she won the Arizona state Amateur Championships for the third consecutive year. In the previous year (2001), she qualified for the US Amateur Championships staged in Kansas.

She won the Arizona Women's Golf Association's State Stroke-Play Championship in 2000 at the Tonto Verde Golf Club in Scottsdale, and represented Arizona State against Utah State too. She also qualified for the British Open Amateur Championship in Surrey as well as for the 100th US Women's Amateur Championship in Portland, Oregon.

Before taking up appointment in the USA, Thuhashini had a splendid record in Sri Lanka and the Asian region as well, particularly in the 1999-2000 season when she won eight national titles within the space of nine months.

They were the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship for the third time, Singapore Open Amateur Championships with a new course record of gross 66 in 1999, Hong Kong Open Amateur Championships, China Open Championships in Zahai Golf and Country Club, Thailand Open Amateur Championship in Bangkok, Philippine Open Amateur Championships in Manila, All-India Open Amateur Championships in Bangalore as well as the Emirates Open Amateur Championships with a new Course record of gross 68.

During the same season (1999/2000), Thuhashini, was the runner-up at the Malaysian Open Amateur Championship with a new course record of a gross 66, won the Epson Sourjana Open also in Malaysia, the RCGC Ladies Championships for the sixth occasion and the Sri Lanka Women's Stroke-play Championships for the third time in Nuwara-Eliya.
