Five Lankans get awards in chess tourney dominated by Indians

Five Sri Lankans out of a total Sri Lankan contingent of 41 players of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club of the Russian Centre in Colombo got awards in the 9th Solar Open Chess Tournament held in Chennai, India in which the Indian players dominated.

Ravidee Udara Gunaratne of Visakha Vidyalaya came 10th in the under 8 girls event, getting 5 points out of 8 while Dilmi Anoraratne of Museaus College came 12th scoring 5 points out of 8 also in the under 8 girls event.

Then among the boys, Shanil Wijesinghe of Colombo International School came 10th among the under 8 boys, getting 6 points out of 8 and Ruwantha Pigera of C.W.W. Kannangara College, Borella came 12th for boys under 18 scoring 5 1/2 points out of 8.

Among the Indians, S. Bharathi of NLC Girls High School got top points 8 out of 8 in the under 18 girls event, while R. Ashwath (SBO - A) got 9 out of 9 in the under 12 boys and P. Saravanakrishnan (Modern SSS) too got 9 out of 9.

Awards were made for the first 12 players in all the age categories - under 8, 10, 12, 14 and 18.
