Colombo Gymkhana Tennis C'ships : Free entry, lodging for North - East players by LAL GUNESEKERA Tennis players from the northern and eastern provinces have been invited to participate at the Colombo Gymkhana Open Tennis Championship, which is a ranking tournament of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), to be staged on the Gymkhana Club courts from March 10 to 16. A spokesman for the Gymkhana Club told the Sunday Observer that if any player from the north and east decides to play, their entries will be received free of charge, and if possible, accommodation too could be provided in Colombo. The Gymkhana Club has been conducting Open Tennis Championships for over half a century, although there has been a few "breaks" in the past few years and nine events are to be worked off. They are - Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Boys and Girls Under-12 and Under-14 Singles, Veterans Over-45 and Over-60 Doubles. He said that all players between the ages of 17 and 25 years who are in the national rankings will be given free entry into the Open Singles and Doubles events in an attempt to increase the interest and contribute towards the national need. Entry forms could be obtained from February 10 at the Gymkhana Club, Maitland Crescent. |
