First Footwork International Dancesport Championship on April 6

Danceport, as ballroom and Latin American dancing is now referred to, has come to a point where it is globally recognised as a sport. So much so that there is a fair chance of it making it to the Olympic Games as a sporting event in the future.

Ever since dance championships were introduced to Sri Lanka in the mid 80s dancesport has taken an upward trend and our dancers are currently in a position to vie with contestants from around the world at international championships. Most countries consider Sri Lankan competitors healthy competition and this is well justified by the awards and accolades that our dancers have won at these championships. Due to various factors most Sri Lankan couples do not get the opportunity to demonstrate their talent at international level.

Considering the position dancesport has reached locally and the ever-growing popularity of the sport, Footwork, who has successfully organised eight local dancesport championships over the past seven years, has organised the first international championship in Sri Lanka to be held on April 6.

The sole aim behind organising this event is to enable our talented dancers to pursue their dreams of gaining international recognition in the sport and also to give our local audiences the opportunity to experience the grandeur of an international dancesport championship.

Michael Torres and Sabine Karmski, three times German Latin American dance champions will be performing and also adjudicating at the championship. In addition 14 other international adjudicators have been invited from Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and China.

Over 30 international entries are expected and confirmations are already flowing in. The Sri Lankan team is expected to consist of about 25 couples. Each team representing their respective countries will be vying against each other for the 14 championship trophies.

The main sponsor for this event is Carlsberg who have given their continuous support over the past few years for the dancesport championships.

Firmly establishing their commitment to dancesport in Sri Lanka, the Daily News and the Sunday Observer have come forward as the official print media sponsor for the event. The official TV station is Dynavision and the official radio stations are Sun FM and Gold FM. Connaissance de Ceylan Ltd is the official ground handling agent. SriLankan Airlines will be making a contribution towards flying down the adjudicators while accommodation for the adjudicators and overseas competitors will be at the Trans Asia Hotel.

Sponsorships are available for established companies. The championship will provide an ideal opportunity for sponsors to reach their target markets and gain maximum brand exposure.

Tickets for this event can be reserved from Footwork. For more details call Footwork on 074 408822 and 0777 777111 or visit www.footworkevents.com.

THE GURU, a romantic comedy directed by Tracy Jackson and produced by Tim Bevan,Eric Fellner and Michael London with Shekhar Kapur,Liza Chasin and Debra Hayward as executive producers will come to the screen from February 14, Valentine Day at the Majestic in Colombo and Regal in Kandy.

It is a story about a young Indian dance teacher in Delhi, who embarks for New York City in pursuit of fame and fortune, ends up as a waiter in an Indian restaurant. Within this story we find that good fortune smiles at Ramu Gupta (role played by Jimi Mistry) he rises to fame as opportunities come up in strange places as it does in the case of Ramu. He discovers when a catering gig at a ditzy socialite's birthday party(Marisa Tomei) catapults him into an extravagant version of the American dream.

Mistaken for a spiritual healer by the people at the party Ramu becomes an overnight celebrity with the city's elite hanging onto his every word-no matter how absurd. The trouble is Ramu is also falling in love with the one woman (Heather Graham) who knows the real source of seemingly profound insights. Ramu is left with to choose between his new-found notoriety and his love for a woman who accepts him as he is. This, an exuberantly comic tale of clashing cultures from Universal Pictures and Working Title Films, The Guru will be an entertaining film with a screenplay by Tracey Jackson. (WIRUMA)
