Volunteer teachers' dispute : Report ready next month by Anjana Gamage The sub-committee appointed look into the grievances of volunteer teachers and study their demands will finalise their report and submit to the relevant authorities by the middle of next month. According to Education Ministry sources, the sub committee comprises Minister of Cultural, Human Resources Development and Education, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Minister of Public Administration, Vajira Abeywardena, and other higher officials of the two ministries and volunteer teacher representatives. About 2000 volunteer teachers of North Central and North Western provinces underwent a month-long Satyagraha campaign in front of " Isurupaya", demanding an immediate solution to their grievances. More than 200 teachers also launched a fast unto death protest last week which was called off on February 11, following the intervention of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Public Administration Minister Vajira Abeywardena. Among the volunteer teachers were 75 graduates demanding permanent teaching posts. Some of the teachers claimed they had been in the volunteer service for more than 10 years. Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has taken steps to streamline the recruitment of volunteer teachers to the teaching service, with priority to those who have served in the North and East and the border villages. |
