Wife drugged before being killed by husband : Indebtedness led to double tragedy

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

Businessman Lal Bogoda had drugged his wife by offering her a glass of orange juice mixed with piriton tablets before killing her and then committing suicide by shooting himself with a 9 mm calibre pistol at his upstairs residence at D.S. Jayasinghe Road, Kohuwela, last Monday according to police sources.

The motive for the murder and suicide, police said, were financial problems faced by the businessman who was indebted to several banks.

A suicide note written by Bogoda was found in his bedroom by the police. The bodies of Lal Bogoda and his wife Marie Sandiya Fonseka were discovered by his servant, the following morning when he visited their bedroom with tea.

Police said that Bogoda had previously suggested to his wife, the idea of joint suicide, but she had totally rejected it. She had even telephoned her sister in Mount Lavinia and informed her about it. The blood-stained body of Bogoda was found on the floor near their bed while his wife's body was on the bed. Both had head injuries resulting from gun shots. The motive for killing his wife was to spare her from the agony of suffering as he was bankrupt, police said.

The incident had taken place around midnight last Sunday after Bogoda returned home. The foreign-made 9 mm calibre pistol had been issued to him by the Defence Ministry for his own protection.

The 41-year-old businessman, a native of Balangoda, was the owner of an agricultural company. His wife Marie Sandya Fonseka, 31, was from Kohuwela. Although, the couple had been married for eight years, they did not have children. Marie Sandya's parents were living in a house close by.

Earlier, his Prado jeep worth Rs. 3.5 million had been stolen by someone, police said.
