'Youth Core for Peace' concert to celebrate Peace

'Youth Core for Peace', a group of multi-racial youth will hold a peace concert on the 22nd to commemorate the first anniversary of the ceasefire agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE. The concert featuring Sri Lanka's top bands AOC (Absence of Colour), Independent Square, Stigmata and Kreb-S-Cycle will be held at the Vihara Maha Devi Park and the proceeds will go towards supplying desks, chairs, laboratory equipment and sports supplies to schools in the war stricken North.

Planned for a three hour duration, starting at 7.00 p.m., the concert will open with a special presentation aimed at creating awareness among youth about the ongoing peace process. Peace messages will be played throughout the concert.

'Youth Core for Peace' is unique organisation in that it has been founded by young students who are privileged enough to enjoy excellent facilities at school but recognise that there are a large number of students in the conflict-affected areas who are denied even basic facilities at school.

Echoing this sentiment, Tasha Marikkar Co-Founder of the "Youth Core for Peace" said, "We are dismayed by the poor facilities of the schools in areas such as Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu. Whilst celebrating one year of peace, we feel it is of utmost importance to extend our hand of friendship to these schooling youth who have suffered due to the consequences of war".

Through the concert, Youth Core for Peace will aim at raising awareness among the youth of the country regarding the benefits of peace by drawing attention to the number of lives that have been saved this past year and the new found freedom which every citizen of Sri Lanka is enjoying in the wake of the peace process.

Gajan Selvarajah also a co-founder of Youth Core for Peace said, "The idea of having a concert with western music is based on the fundamentally accepted fact that this form of music already engages the youth of all ethnic groups. Music is an influential medium amongst youth as it transcends language and ethnic divisions as well as being a vehicle for celebration".

"Youth Core for Peace" was founded by a group of teenagers spanning the ages of sixteen to eighteen who got together to help foster a spirit of peace and understanding among ethnic communities. The group itself is a fine example of ethnic harmony. Its members belong to different ethnic communities in the country - Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor and Colombo Chetty. The other core members of "Youth Core for Peace" include Ruan Pethiyagoda, Anushka Nagendra and Sherazad Hamit.
