Three new sides - namely Australian Barbarians, New Zealand Centurions and Spain, will play in the Singer-Sri Lankan International Rugby 7's conducted by the Kandy Sports Club to be staged at the Bogambara Stadium on September 5, 6 and 7. The tourney is being sponsored once again by Singer (Sri Lanka) Limited and SriLankan Airlines with Connaissance de Ceylan as co-sponsors.

The other 13 sides from overseas who have already confirmed participation are: Portugal, Kenya, Arabian Gulf, India, Netherlands, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and China. Sri Lanka too is taking part and the organisers said that they will have to cut down on the sides.

Last year (2002), Portugal won the Cup category beating Kenya 24-21 in the final, while South Korea won the 'Plate' beating Malaysia 27-26 and Hong Kong the 'Bowl' beating India 50-0. Sri Lanka who entered the Cup category semi-finals lost to Kenya 0-33.

Meanwhile, the dates for the International Rugby Board (IRB)/Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Quadrangular has been confirmed. Sri Lanka's first game is against Japan on April 20 in Japan, the second against Arabian Gulf at Longden Place on May 16 and against Hong Kong at either Nittawela or Bogambara Stadium on May 31.

The national pool is to be picked shortly and will initially come under Kivi coach George Simpkin until the national coach is picked by the SLRFU soon.

The annual general meeting of the SLRFU is scheduled for February 22 at the Trans Asia Hotel at 10.30 a.m. and Deputy President Mohan Balasuriya is to be elected as President uncontested. Former Sri Lanka captain Priyantha Ekanayake is to come in as Deputy President, while Nalin de Silva and Shantha Kurumbalapitiya will continue as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

Ten persons are vying for seven berths in the Council. They are: Iqbal Hassan, Arjun Dharmadasa, Major General Krishnaratne, Lasitha Gunaratne, Michael Jayasekera, Iswan Omar, Tuan Dole, SSP Nimal Lewke, Rizly Illyaz and Fazal Mohamed.

The President of the SLRFU, Commodore Harsha Mayadunne, said that he was successful in getting Maurice Perera to withdraw his nomination for the post of President to end the controversy that was raging.
