Sahan Wijeratne likely to captain Sri Lanka under-19 vs ECB team

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Cambrian Sahan Wijeratne - the Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year - a prolific run-scorer in school cricket, is tipped to lead the Sri Lankan Under 19 team against the touring ECB (England Cricket Board) National Cricket Academy team in their opening three-day match on February 19 at Police Park.

The tourists will also play matches against a Sri Lankan Development squad and with a Sri Lankan 'A' team.

Some of the other players who are likely to represent the under-19 side are left arm leg spinner Komasaru, Peterite wicketkeeper Gihan de Silva, Thomian wicketkeeper batsman Kaushal Silva and Ferveez Maharoof of Wesley who was a member of the under 19 World Cup team in New Zealand.

A strong ECB National Cricket Academy team from England will arrive today (Sunday) in the Island to play a series of matches with the Sri Lankan under-19 and 'A' team during their one month stay in the Island.

The English team comprises a solitary 'Test' player Robert Key from Kent who toured Australia for the recently concluded 'Ashes' series and has played three 'Tests' with a top score of 53 in the fourth 'Test'at Melbourne and several players who have represented counties and no doubt the youngsters of either side are bound to get stiff competition.

The visitors will play three four-day 'Tests' and three one-day Internationals in addition to their opening three-day practice game at Police Park on February 19 against a Sri Lankan under-19 team.

The first 4-day 'unofficial Test' will begin on 24th February at NCC while the second 4-day game is at Police Park.

The teams will then travel to Dambulla where the third four-day game will take place followed by the first one day game. The second one-day match will be played at Kurunegala and the third and final one day game is in Colombo at the NCC grounds.

The Director of the ECB National Academy is former Australian Test wicketkeeper Rodney Marsh and there will be four more officials in the tour party.
