New President of the BASL by Kumar Wethasinghe Ananda Wijesekera, PC, was elected the new President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka by a large majority of votes, at the BASL elections held a few days ago. Mr. Wijesekera is an old boy of Mahinda and Richmond Colleges Galle. He graduated from the University of Ceylon Peradeniya. During his undergraduate days he became the President of the Students' Council. He was first called to the Bar in 1959, and served in the Chambers of legal luminaries Neville Samarakone QC, Sir Ukwatte Jayasundera QC and K. C. Nadarajah. In 1993, Mr. Wijesekera was appointed a President's Counsel. Mr. Wijesekera has earned the respect of all for his firm commitment towards the practice of professional ethics, moral principles and pristine values in an exemplary manner. At present, he is the Chairman of a Disciplinary Committee appointed by the Chief Justice. He was a past President of Colombo Magistrate's Court Lawyers' Association and Chairman of a Professional Purposes Committee of the BASL. He also chaired the Criminal Law Sessions at the National Law Conference of 1988 and 2002 and served in the BASL ExCo during 2002-2003. |
