Maha Sivarathri on March 1 Maha Sivarathri falls on Saturday March 1 which is a public and bank holiday. Hindus the world over will visit temples and engage in prayers throughout the night. ************ Missing servicemen, highlighted at ICRC confab Agony faced by parents and families of servicemen missing in action, was highlighted at an international conference on missing persons, held in Geneva, Switzerland from February 19 to 21, organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). ICRC sources said that video cassettes of testimonies of families was shown on the opening day of the conference. Experts from more than 90 countries were present on the occasion. Yvonne Visaka Dharmadasa, President of the Association of Parents of Servicemen Missing in Action, speaking at the forum, had pointed out the psychological, social and economic problems faced by the families. She spoke in particular, of the difficulties faced by women with social structures such as Sri Lanka, where isolation and rejection are common. - CW ************ School bags, shoes donated to needy students Mr. Klous Lintamon, representative of Sri Lankan-German charitable services organisation in Sri Lanka, donated school bags to needy students at Beruwala on behalf of the organisation at the request of Al Haj Imtiyas Bakeer Markar, Minister of Mass Communications. Mr. Lintamon distributed these bags among four-hundred needy students in five schools in Beruwala - Maligahena Maha Vidyalaya, Al-Fassiyathul Nasriya Balika Vidyalaya, I.L.M. Samsudeen Vidyalaya, Massala Buddhist Kanista Vidyalaya and Bandarawatta Vidyalaya. Mr. Lintamon also donated Rs. 15,000 to the respective principals of Buddhist Kanista Vidyalaya and Maligahena Maha Vidyalaya for the supply of shoes to 40 children in the two schools. ************ Mystery vessel, a Chinese fishing trawler There was no mystery about the vessel sighted in the Eastern waters of Sri Lanka on Friday morning. Investigations by the Navy found that the vessel to be a Chinese fisheries trawler, blocking trawler lines and harassing the fishermen. The vessel was initially suspected to be an LTTE trawler but Captain Jayantha Perera, spokesman of the Sri Lanka Navy, confirmed that an immediate inquiry carried out to ascertain the identity, after receiving information from Colombo Radio Shipping Services had revealed it was not an LTTE vessel. -RK ************ Air Show on March 1,2 A grand air show and a ground display organised by the Association of Retired Flag Rank Officers in aid of Ranaviru Family Counselling Service (RFCS) and welfare funds of the three services and Police. will be held on March 1,2 from 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. at Katukurunda. ************ Child needs your help Two-year old Udayanganie Herath of Maligagodella in Mulleriyawa is suffering from an acute heart problem.
