Jembo tennis put off for October

The Jembo Men's Futures Championship of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) which was scheduled to be worked off from February 24 to March 2 at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath, has now been postponed for October.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Boshan Dayaratne, told the Sunday Observer that the ITF were forced to put it off as India had not sent the entries in time to the ITF. One leg of the Futures was to be staged in India and another in Sri Lanka. There were 60 players from abroad last year.

However, the ITF, has now decided to conduct two Futures tournaments in Colombo in October, followed by two further tournaments in Thailand and one in Vietnam. The prize money involved is US dollars 10,000/- per tournament.

The Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV) competition too is to be staged at the NTC in Greenpath from June 16 to 22 involving 10 countries including Sri Lanka. The others are - Singapore, Bangladesh, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Brunei, Vietnam and Myanmar.

The women's circuit event with world ranked players with prize money also of US dollars 10,000/- too is to be held at the NTC in Greenpath for the first time from August 18 to 24. (L.G)
