Shivantha Vivekanandan - a glutton for work

In 56 year-old Shivantha Vivekanandan - the Deaf School Past Pupils' Association has a tireless worker and no task is too big for him. He is the chairman of the Organising Committee of Deaf School Past Pupils' Association.

He started off by organising the Deaf Schools Softball Cricket Sixes in 2000 and followed it up with the Deaf Schools Netball Tournament sponsored by Caltex in 2002 and today's tournament is the second successive year one that has the generous sponsorship of Caltex.

Though he was born deaf, he joined the School for the Deaf, Ratmalana at the age of four years and a trained deaf teacher late Miss Molly Williams taught him the art of lip-reading, and gradually he began to talk with his friends and relations. He had satisfactory results at the GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Examinations and was also good at painting and received the Gold Star certificate for having his drawings exhibited at the London Royal Drawing Society Exhibition in 1963.

However, it was in the field of sports that Shivantha really excelled. He was an active member of the Deaf Recreation Club, Rajagiriya where he took an active part in cricket, football, athletics and table tennis. It was in athletics that he fared best, being adjudged champion athlete at the Annual National Athletic Meet for the Deaf in 1969, 1970, 1976 and 1977. In 1970, he somewhat set a record winning four events - 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and putt shot.

He somewhat excelled in table tennis too, being the table tennis champion from 1971 to 1979 in the National Indoor Games Tournament for the deaf.

He has won many awards for sports and he has a total of 123 prizes won for sports.

Shivantha is married and his wife - Naguleswary is normal and he has a son - Ahilan and a daughter Karthiga who are both normal. He is presently employed as a Senior Architectural Assistant. (A.C.de S.)
