Colombo Port transshipment volumes up The Port of Colombo handled 102,321 TEUs of transshipment containers last month, registering a growth of 22.1 per cent over February 2002 figures. The total container throughput handled during February 2003 was 146,737 TEUs, a growth of 17.2 per cent against the total throughput handled during the corresponding month of last year. The transshipment growth last month is the highest growth level achieved by a transshipment port in the region. The surge in volumes at the Port is attributed to the productivity enhancement measures and marketing approach adopted by the Jaya Container Terminal and South Asia Gateway Terminals. The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers has commended the improvement in productivity and discipline at the Port and the measures taken by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to remove the incentive payments to expedite vessel operations. |
