Rock Company sessions will be held on a regular monthly basis every last Sunday of the month from 5 pm to 10 pm. The March 30 event will kick off with an unplugged folk rock session for individual or twosomes to be followed with an electric session from 6 pm onwards where new bands or members from different bands could join together to perform Classic or Alternate rock music for around 45 minute periods allowing the opportunity for at least five such events on this day offering the opportunity for young talent to emerge. Rock Company was a unique club that existed during the eighties at the height of the Rock era that engulfed practically the whole world. The Club was formed with the objective of bringing forth hidden talent and also to propagate camaraderie among rock music lovers in Sri Lanka. Monthly meetings were held at KOKO's where a large crowd of rock music lovers gathered providing an excellent opportunity for young talented musicians to expose their talent in an ideal environment. It must be also said that the Rock Company was the breeding grounds for many top musicians who are playing for popular bands of today. In addition the monthly meetings helped to generate much goodwill and friendship among its members due to their common love for music various rock bands and artistes played for free with a news letter being sold and a nominal fee charged as entrance just to cover the expenses such as hall hire and sound equipment hire etc. at the time the Rock Company had a large membership from all parts of the country. Today rock music has re-emerged as the choice of music among the younger generation with Alternate Rock which is currently very popular in Sri Lanka. The recently concluded Levis Rock festival had 8 local rock bands playing original compositions of their own with some of the songs played being of international quality. In addition to this young segment and older segment - who were rock music lovers during the 80's - still pursue Classic Rock music that even now is very popular in both these segments. A few of the old Rock Company members have organised to resume the Rock Company on a regular basis as a monthly event so that rock music lovers could meet on a regular basis. It is also envisaged that through these monthly meetings the Rock Company could offer exposure for up and coming musicians to develop their talents while providing them with the opportunity to make friends with one another. Further to the direct benefits of these monthly meetings the ultimate objective of the Rock Company will be to have a studio of its own eventually, to be able to offer the possibility for talented rock musicians in our country to develop original music at the studio at a very nominal cost which currently cannot be afforded by most musicians. The currently planned Rock Company monthly meet is the first step towards this objective and in the current context will at least generate - in the short term - the possibility for new talent to emerge and expose their talents to such a gathering. We also hope to have a Rock Company newsletter to be sold also at a nominal fee which will carry articles about new bands and other snippets of interesting information from the rock world. by Richard Dwight |
