PM to check on President's allegation Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday instructed Minister of Interior, John Amaratunga to investigate and report to him, an allegation by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, that there was a move to create communal unrest in Colombo, during the joint opposition rally and hold the Opposition responsible for it. President Kumaratunge, in a letter to Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, had stated that she had been informed of plans to attack Tamil business establishments, in Colombo during the Joint Opposition Alliance rally to 'Save the Nation, and blame it on the opposition. Pointing out that in 1983 too the Opposition had been held responsible for the violence and that several of its members had been arrested, the President had requested the Prime Minister to take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence. According to reliable sources, the Prime Minister, had received the letter late Friday night, and had immediately instructed the Minister of Interior to immediately investigate the allegation and report back to him. He had also instructed the Minister to take necessary action to prevent any unrest. A large number of SLFP, JVP, MEP and NUA supporters are expected to participate in the Joint Opposition Rally, scheduled to commence at Campbell Park at 1.00 pm tomorrow and proceed to the Town Hall premises. The rally is aimed at forcing the government to bring down the cost of living, provide a reasonable salary for workers and be transparent in its proceedings. |
