New traffic rules bear fruit The Pilot project initiated by the Traffic Police with the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation to ease traffic congestion in the Galle Road has proved successful with the Traffic Police receiving less complaints from the public, DIG, (Traffic, Administration and Road Safety and the project coordinator) Daya Jayasundara told the 'Sunday Observer'. Last week the Traffic Police in collaboration with the Ministry outlawed the parking of vehicles along the road from Galle Face Circus to Maliban Junction at Ratmalana except at specific places reserved for parking. The rule is effective from 7.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon on sea side and from 12.00 noon to 7.00 p.m. on the land side. DIG Jayasundara said that they were on the lookout for drivers who park vehicles on pavements and bus stands and would fine them. He also said that the Ministry had already advised the Municipal Councils of relevant areas to remove obstructions on pavements and bus halts. "Police mobiles will supervise the road every 10 minutes" he said. Meanwhile, a Ministry official said that a parking fee will be levied from motorists who park at the reserved slots. He also said that they will be implementing the project in Kandy in April. DW |
