Special incentives to boost bi-lingual competency by Chamikara Weerasinghe The Government of Norway has agreed to release more funds to the National Integration Ministry's on-going programs to promote bi-lingual competency among public officers and police personnel, countrywide. Dr. Thilokasundari Kariyawasam, Director, National Integration Program Unit of the Ministry said that a group of Norwegian government officials including Consultant Kubberud had agreed to increase the funds to vigorously implement a provincial-based Tamil and Sinhala language training program for public officers. With the funds the ministry plans to step up action to introduce Sinhala language courses for Tamil-speaking public in the Northeast, which will complement its on-going Tamil language educational programmes conducted by NIPU in the South for public officers and police personnel, Dr. Kariyawasam said. Meanwhile, the National Integration Ministry is looking into possibilities of introducing various incentives, such as salary increments and special allowances to public officers who follow Tamil language courses conducted by NIPU. The ministry has made a proposal for consideration of the Treasury to increase the salaries of public officers and police personnel who follow Tamil language courses under NIPU's supervision. The ministry has so far given training to 240 police personnel in the South and 100 public officers in the Tamil language since its launching of bi-lingual education programmes with the aegis from the Norwegian government. It has also conducted Tamil Language courses for more than 1,000 members of Maha Sangha, the ministry sources said. |
