Ex-PA members join UNP by Don Asoka Wijewardena Five former People's Alliance members, S. B. Dissanayaka, Prof. G. L. Peiris, Mahinda Wijesekara, Bandula Gunawardena and G. B. Wijekoon who crossed over to United National Party and formed the United National Front (UNF) will formally join the UNP on Wednesday, March 12 at an official ceremony in Kandy. Also joining the UNP will be Lionel Premasiri, Mayor of Galle, 12 Pradeshiya Sabha MPs and members of the Urban Councils. The former UNF members will receive their party membership from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Samurdhi, Agriculture and Livestock Minister S. B. Dissanayaka, told the Sunday Observer that he was grateful to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for accepting the applications of his colleagues for permanent membership to the UNP from the UNF and wished that other parties of the UNF would endeavour to work with the government with clear determination to achieve the expected goals of the government. He also said that it would be a historic occasion to receive UNP party membership under the charismatic leadership of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe. General Secretary of the United National Party, Senerath Kapukotuwa, said that arrangements would be made to celebrate the momentous occasion of PA stalwarts receiving UNP membership after crystallising the primary objectives of the UNP. Kapukotuwa said that he together with Chairman of the UNP, Malik Samarawickrema will call on Mahanayakas of Asgiriya and the Malwatte chapters on Wednesday morning to invoke blessings for the occasion. A massive rally organised by the UNP and the UNF will take place opposite Kandy market at 2.30 p.m. on the same day. It is believed that a large number of supporters from various parts of the country will participate in the rally to show their solidarity to the government. Kapukotuwa also said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will preside and will address the masses on the progress of the peace process and the economy of the country. |
