Hong Kong RC wins first ever women's rugby tourney by SRIAN OBEYESEKERE It was not the usually familiar sight of the masculine heavyweights tearing away with the ball yesterday at Longden Place. For a change it was the fair, dainty damsels who held sway on a fine sunshine Saturday. The day saw the fairer sex running down the ball to the roars of the crowd. No wonder! It was the first ever of its type held in Sri Lanka. And the Women's Invitation Rugby Tournament saw some even keel between the finalists - the lasses from the Sri Lanka Army and the Hong Kong Rugby Club. But a few fumbles when one of the soldier girls who did a near 30 yard dash to be brought down at the post, saw the foreigners - a mixture of Chinese and British expatriates wrest control to runaway with a 12-nil win having had a 5 point lead at the turnaround. Try scorers for the winners were Natasha Westen and Kwok Yukun. But defeat did not take away a day of brilliance by the soldier girls who on the way to emerging runners-up got the better of the rest of the local cream. Sri Lanka women's rugby team for Hong Kong sevens Sri Lanka will field a 20-strong squad for the first time in an international women's rugby tournament - the Asian Zone Women's Sevens in Hong Kong from March 27-28. The Lankan squad: Nilmini Gunawardena, Anusha Kodituwakku, Sandeepa Sandamali, Nadeera Nandani and Swarna Kanthi Dissanayake (all from Slimline), Rukshani Ariyawansa, Dinushi Edirisinghe, Enoshi Jayasena, Ruvini and Subashini (Kalani Valley), Franciska Handapanagoda (Sabaragamuwa), Chathurika Mauri, Thanuja Dilrukshi (Central Province), Jayasinghe, Lankawa, Kumari, Ranasinghe, Sandaya, Rupasinghe and Amarasiri (all from Army). |
