India semi-final move turned down JOHANNESBURG, March 8 (AFP) - India's request to have the day-night World Cup semi-final at Durban's Kingsmead ground on March 20 switched to a daytime affair was rejected Friday, a spokesman for the International Cricket Council (ICC) told AFP. On Thursday, Ali Bacher, the World Cup's executive director, said he would consider a suggestion from Indian cricket board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya for the match to be switched. Dalmiya's move came following fears, expressed by India captain Sourav Ganguly among others, that the day-night format gave the side bowling second a signifcant advantage because of increased dew on the pitch.. "I have agreed to consider, with colleagues at the World Cup office, the implications of the BCCI's (Board of Control for Cricket in India) request. "Mr Dalmiya has assured me that he and the BCCI will accept whatever decision I and my colleagues from the organising committee reach on the matter," Bacher added. Dalmiya had said earlier: "We are not making any formal request (to change the timings of the match) but talking to everybody involved, especially the organisers, to agree to our suggestion." Dalmiya said many countries had agreed that a day-night semifinal at Durban on March 20 would give an unfair advantage to the team batting first. "We do not want to create any problem for the organisers as the schedule has been finalised two years in advance," Dalmiya said. "If any change has to be made, it has to be with everybody's consent. We are talking to every team involved as well as the organisers and the change will be made only if everybody agrees to it." |
