Ariyawansa century helps Joes beat Peterites by 159 runs

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

A resourceful century (109) by Tharindu Ariyawansa and an inspired spell of bowling by medium pacer Sandun Dias ( 5 for 18) hepled St.Joseph's to regain the Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai Memorial Shield when they beat St. Peter's by 159 runs in their 29th annual limited over cricket match at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday. The Peterites were shot out for 58 runs in 23.2 overs the lowest total in the limited overs series in reply to the Joes 217.

The Joes who were sent into bat after the Peterites won the toss scored 217 mainly due to the century struck by Ariyawansa. He had 11 boundaries and faced 153 deliveries. Useful contributions came from the bats of skipper Deshan Bastianpillai and Shamal Warnakula.

The Peterites in their turn were reduced to 6 for 30 in 15.1 overs as the Joes opening bowler Angelo Mathews and Sandun Dias struck vital blows in rapid succession. The cream of the Peterite batting were melted by Mathews and Dias sharing 5 wickets among themselves.Right arm leg spinner Ranesh Perera rendered valuable support to the medium pacers taking 2 for 11 in 4 overs and the Peterites were dismissed for 58 in 23.2 overs.

Ariyawansa was judged man of the match and the best batsman, Sandun Dias and Ranesh Perera of St.Joseph's won the best bowler's and fielder's awards respectively. Former Josephian all rounder Ranjan de Silva was the chief guest while Sri Lanka Test left arm fast bowlers Nuwan Zoysa was the adjudicator.
