Sachith Pathirana and Asiri Ariyaratne rescue Trinity to force draw

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent

Thirteen year old Sachith Pathirana 50 (7 fours, 94 balls) and Asiri Ariyaratne 54 not out (6 fours, 184 balls) rescued Trinity College with seventh wicket partnership of 87 runs to force a draw in their 87th

'Battle of the Blues' against St. Anthony's College concluded at Katugastota yesterday. When this pair came to the wicket the Trinitians were tottering at 91 for 6 and they needed a further 25 runs to avoid the follow on and set an example to others by displaying both caution and aggression to take the sting of the Antonian attack.

The pair was going great guns and they looked like overhauling their opponents total before little Sachith Pathirana was run out (the only way they would have got him out) when he played the ball to the short mid wicket and Dhanushka Bandaranayake picked up the ball in a flash and threw it to wicketkeeper Rizlan who broke the stumps before Pathirana could ground his bat.

The Trinitians who were 200 for 7 at one stage lost their last three wickets with no addition to the score. Tyronne de Silva who reached 1,000 runs on Friday rounded off a fine allround performance by capturing 5 for 75 with his left arm cutters.

There was a little bit of drama in the morning when a ball by Tyronne rose up sharply and Clifford Fernando was caught at short mid wicket when trying to fend the delivery. In the next over, two batsmen were hit on the body as the wicket was showing uneven bounce. The match was stopped and the players went for lunch 15 minutes earlier as there was a little uncertainty whether play would continue. But saner counsel prevail and the match was continued after lunch without any further mishap.
