Lankan films gain recognition in France

The selection of Vimukthi Jayasundera's 30 minute fiction film Vide Pour l' Amour (Empty for Love) for the 2003 edition of Cannes has helped boost Sri Lankan cinema in the French market.

A comment in "Cahiers du Cinema" in its latest issue, referring to the new Asiatic wave in world cinema says, Sri Lankan cinema shows an international explosion and has been welcomed enthusiastically in the French market.

"We are sure that Vimukthi is one of the central actors of this new dynamism of Sri Lankan cinematography", says a statement from Natalia Trebik, Broadcasting Manager of Le Fresnoy Studio Des Arts Contemporaries, where Vimukthi has been living since 2001.

Vimukthi was born in 1977 in Sri Lanka. He became involved in media and television upon leaving Mahinda College, Galle (where he received his primary and secondary education) and went on to study cinema at the Film and Television Institute of India. He returned to Sri Lanka and was employed at the Lowe Lintas Worldwide ad agency as a copywriter for three years. Since 2001 he has been in residence at Le Fresnoy Studio Des Arts Contemporaries, France.

Vide Pour l' Amour (Empty for love) Fiction - 30 minutes/16 mm 2002

The story of the film is situated in Sri Lanka and France. In public, life is aimlessly dragged on in a long insecure presence. The young civil guard whose duty is to protect the village is obliged to kill his time throughout the day in a bunker. He loves a young girl who goes to school. She daily travels from her village to her school. Only one bus operates between the city and the village.

Another old man, not directly connected with these two characters, who buys chicken in the village, and after killing them, sells them in the town, enters in the film as a symbolic character. The army, having nothing to do now, waste their time in the barracks. They are living in a distress resulting from the monotonous and grave emptiness. Though all these three characters meet each other, they depart without any conflict or dialogue but throughout the film a certain rhythm is developed to create a relationship and a conflict among them.

On the other hand, the curiosity generated from this is transformed into a fiction. While all of them are looking forward to a change in their lives in breaking the monotony.
