FM reprimands Iraq envoy

by Ananth Palakidnar

Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando on Friday warned the Charge de Affairs of Iraq in Sri Lanka W. Abbas to be cautious about stirring up anti-war protests and demonstrations with regard to the current conflict situation between the United States of America and Iraq.

According to informed sources Minister Tyronne Fernando has summoned the Charge de Affairs of Iraq in Colombo to his office on Friday and explained to him the stance taken by the Government of Sri Lanka with regard to the US-Iraq conflict. The Minister had also warned the envoy that he would be compelled to reduce the staff of the Iraq embassy in Colombo if the embassy was discovered to be involved in any protests.

Sources said that the Minister's warning to the Charge de Affairs followed intelligence reports received by the Foreign Ministry that there were moves by Iraq to organise anti-American protests in Sri Lanka over the current turmoil in the Gulf.

Minister Fernando had explained to the Iraq envoy the importance of the current peace process carried out in Sri Lanka and the role played by the International community in support of the peace initiatives.

Earlier this week officials of the US embassy in Colombo had met the Foreign Minister and apprised him on the agitations planned against America and urged him to look into the matter informed sources said.
