Sharp drop in price of rice By our Kandy South Group Correspondent, S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen The price of rice has dropped considerably in the local market in the hill capital, during the past few days, which has been most welcomed by the residents who had felt the crunch of the rising cost of living. The price of ordinary variety of samba which was sold in the retail market anything between Rs. 43 and Rs. 50 per kilogram has now dropped to between Rs. 30 and Rs. 33 and the price varies from trader to trader. Red raw rice which was earlier sold at between Rs. 35 and Rs. 40 per kilogramme has dropped to around Rs. 30 depending on the variety. There are also a few varieties sold for less than Rs. 30. The prices of other varieties of rice too have dropped considerably and some of them, like steam rice is sold for Rs. 25 per kilogramme. The public are happy that the price of rice has dropped with the good harvests experienced by the cultivators and more rice is coming into the market. Some of the traders expressed the view that the price of rice should drop further in the next few weeks as harvesting is being done in large areas. With the price of rice stumbling, the cost of living is bound to further ease and, even the prices of vegetables, too have come down in the hill capital considerably. According to reports, bountiful harvests have been experienced in many areas and with the ideal weather conditions and the interest taken by the farmers following the confidence that they had, their produce will have a market. The prices of vegetables too have slumped to reasonable level. A kilogramme of beans which was two weeks ago sold at Rs. 80 has dropped to Rs. 40 this week. Tomatoes, carrot and beet root too have dropped in price. |
