New Air Force Chief of Staff BY RAMANI KANGARAARACHCHI Air Commodore Lakshan Salgado has been appointed as Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force with effect from 01 January 2003, it was announced last week. The post of Air Force Chief of Staff rendered vacant with the appointment of Air Vice Marshal Donald Perera, who held that post, as the Commander due to the sudden resignation of Air Vice Marshal Jayalath Weerakkody. An old boy of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, Salgado was a well-known athlete. He joined the Sri Lanka Air Force in 1972 as a Cadet Officer. Subsequent to his commissioning in 1974, he was sent to Royal Air Force Flying School in the UK for further training. Commodore Salgado was appointed as a flying instructor on his high standard of performance and later became the Commandant of Flying Training School in the China Bay. He has completed 8,000 flying hours, of which 4,000 as a flying instructor. Most of the senior pilots today have been trained by him. He also held several other key appointments such as Commanding Officer, Ground Attack Squadron,Base Commander, China Bay and Katunayake, Zonal Commander, East and West, during his 30-year career. |
