Roshan de Silva wins cricket medal in Melbourne

by CLIFFORD LANDERS in Australia

Melbourne, March 15 - Twenty-three year-old Sri Lankan all-rounder Roshan de Silva who performed outstandingly for Dandenong West in the popular Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) conducted turf one cricket tourney, was awarded the prestigious Alan Wookey Medal at the awards ceremony held before a large gathering here last week.

The Wookey Medal which is decided at the end of the preliminary round is awarded to the Best and Fairest Player of the tournament and is voted by a panel of umpires. Roshan ended admirably with 28 out of a maximum of 30 votes ahead of last year's winner Steve Chapman (22 votes). Roshan accumulated these points during the first six games played prior to the Christmas break.

He visited Sri Lanka during the break and arrived here overweight by 10 kgs. But he could not be weighed down as he performed well in the remaining games and has claimed 35 wickets with his right-arm medium pace bowling and scored over 250 runs so far. On four occasions he claimed 5 wickets and over with the best figures been 8 for 22 and scored one fifty. Roshan is also tipped to win the Best Player of the Year award.

Last weekend again Roshan rose to the occasion in the semi-final against Parkfield CC. He scored 62 and put on a match winning fourth wicket partnership of 87 runs with his other compatriot in the side in veteran Sri Lanka Test and one-day opening batsman Athula Samarasekara (57) after their side - Dandenong West CC- were reeling at 3 for 31, their team scored 282 and bundled out the opponent for 172 with Roshan claiming one scalp.

Dandenong notable performance took them to the final against St. Mary's to be played on the weekend. Roshan who is following a course in Bachelor of Business Systems at Monash University since 2000 captained St. Joseph's, Colombo during the 1998/99 season and represented Seylan Bank for one season. He opened the bowling with Chaminda Vaas while teammates included Mahela Jayawardane, Thilan Samaraweera and Lanka de Silva.

He told the Sunday Observer that he was delighted to have won this prestigious award and to have played with veteran Athula Samarasekara. "This award was a surprise to me since I had no idea that I was among the top runners for it and it would be an icing on the cake if my team could win the final", he said.
