by Don Asoka Wijewardena

The Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations will have an additional sense of pageantry this year, with all divisional secretaries, district secretaries and Grama Niladaries being instructed to organise festivals in their respective districts.

This is being carried out on a directive from the Minister of Provincial Council,Local Government and Home Affairs Alick Aluvihare.

Sources at the Ministry told the Sunday Observer that arrangements have been made to hold celebrations, reflecting century-old Sinhala rituals and traditions with an emphasis on peace initiatives.

The "Punnya Kalaya" will begin from 5.54 a.m. on April 14 till 6.42 p.m. The auspicious time for lighting the hearth is at 12.51 p.m. and the auspicious colour this year is pearl. Partaking of Kiribath (milk rice) at the auspicious time of 2.15 p.m. facing East. The Ministry urges all to celebrate a peaceful New Year.
