Cloning cult enters Lanka

by Farah Macan Markar

Will Sri Lanka become the latest 'hub' for human cloning? Speculation about an international cloning movement setting up base here has been rife following the arrival of one of its officials, with 'setting up office' as one of the tasks on his agenda. Kotaro Murakawa, a delegate of International Raelian Movement (IRM) which claims to have cloned the first human baby, is in Sri lanka ostensibly to oversee the Sinhala translation of 'The Message Given To Me By Extra Terrestrials' by Thomas Rael.

But on being questioned by the 'Sunday Observer' he admitted he had arrived in the country on the request of some Sri Lankans who have become interested in the Raelian and Clonaid Movement.

Refusing to identify who they were, except to say there were about thirty Sri Lankans interested in the movement, Murakawa said a number of Lankans had shown interest in having cloned babies. When questioned about their plans to set up a Raelian Movement here Murakawa admitted that they were in the process of getting the movement registered locally. An IRM brochure on interactional Raelian Movements, already lists a Lankan Raelian Movement with a Mount Lavinia address.

The Raelian movement believes cloning, DNA and similar technology will save humanity. Murakawa said that Clonaid has created three cloned children, the first from the US, the second from Japan and the third from an Arab country.
