Vesak celebrations in Chennai

by Shiromi Abeyratne

The Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Association in association with the Prime Minister's Office have organised a Vesak perahera and a series of religious programmes to mark the forthcoming Vesak in Chennai, India.

The venue for the celebrations will be the Maha Bodhi Centre at Chennai.

Since a considerable number of Sinhala and Tamil Buddhists live in Chennai, arrangements have been made to conduct a Sil campaign along with other programmes both in Sinhala and Tamil languages.

One of the highlights of the celebrations will be the ordination of 10 Tamils as temporary bhikkhus for a specified period. The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has taken steps to broadcast a live coverage of the celebrations.

The Chennai Vesak programme has been organised by the Ven. Thunhitiyawe Dhammaloka Thera under the patronage of the Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera, Sangha Nayaka of Japan and Viharadhipathi, Maligakanda Agrasrawaka Viharaya. The head of the Chennai Mahabodhi Centre and Viharadhipathi, Nalandaramaya, Nugegoda, the Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha and the Ven. Kalawewa Mahanayake Thera are also associated with it.
